Aaron Wainwright: Dragons to Leicester Move Confirmed

The departures of Welsh internationals to the English Premiership continue with the third row of the Leek XV who will join the Midlands Tigers.

Another Welshman joining England. After Welsh captains Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake who recently announced their departure for Gloucester, it is the turn of Aaron Wainwright to leave Wales to join the English Premiership and the Leicester club. Aged 28, the third row has 62 caps with the XV du Poireau, he has been playing for the Newport Dragons since 2017 with whom he played 127 matches. He is “famous” on this side of the Channel for receiving an elbow from Sébastien Vahaamahina during the quarter-final lost by the Blues at the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

“I’m really delighted. When we see the long history of success of this club, being able to contribute to it and, I hope, make my contribution, that’s what I look forward to doing, Wainwright said in a statement. It was a little surreal to learn of the interest from the Tigers. “I’ve been following the club’s games and seeing how competitive and physical the Tigers are, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

For Geoff Parling, the former England international second row who succeeded Michael Cheika at the helm of the Tigers, “He is an exceptional third row who has proven that he can perform consistently both for club and national team. He arrives with excellent references and wants to progress. We look forward to seeing him add value to our team and to see him show what he is capable of in the Leicester jersey.
