Half-Time Explained: A Beginner’s Guide

Assistant coach Milan Kerbr reviewed the first preparatory match at the winter training camp in Marbella, in which the seamers narrowly lost to the Swiss champion from Basel 3:4.

What did the loss against Basel show you? Comparison of Czech and Swiss master…
“It turned out to be a good test. Of course we’re not happy with the result. I would split it into two halves. In the first one we conceded from the first shot on goal, but we managed to get back into the game. The boys were hungry, there were emotions and they wanted to turn the result around. We knew that every player – apart from Kante and Mbodji – would play one half, so we wanted to win that half. That’s why we The second half must not be repeated. The opponent scored three goals and we faced a penalty. In the league, we are not used to having so many chances, but it is about the desire to win, which is why we are disappointed.”

You and the players stayed in the cabin for a long time after the match. Did you particularly blame them for the second half?
“As I say, it’s not quite common here. We had a lot to say – both players to each other, and especially us coaches. It was a lot towards the new players, so that they know and understand what it means to play for Slavia. In what situations they should behave correctly. I think these things should stay in the cabin.”

A number of players did not participate in the match. How are they doing healthily?
“We agreed with Tomáš Choré and Lukáš Provod that we would not use them in the first match. They played a lot of minutes in the first half of the year and we assessed that we will only use them in the next matches. Doudis had minor health problems. Oskar is healing from an injury from the fall, but he is already training on the field with fitness trainers. He should join soon.”

Is Alexandr Bužek, who brought an injury from the fall, the furthest to return?
“He’s in the same group with Oscar and they’re both training with conditioning coaches. We’ll see how things go for both of them. We hope they’ll join as soon as possible.”

We are in Spain for the third day. Is there satisfaction with everything except the already mentioned result?
“Yes, I would perhaps mention the weather. It rained the first two days, so we had to adjust the program slightly. We had two-phase training before the match, there was a lot of gym and work on the field. The boys have a lot in their legs, but we don’t want to make excuses for that. Basel definitely trains very hard as well.”

You still have two games to play. Will they also be divided into two teams after the halves?
“This is how we wanted to start the first duel. Now we will sit down with the coaches and discuss everything. We will gradually increase the playing time for some players. Towards Barcelona, who we play in a fortnight. That is the topic we will deal with now.”
