Trump FIFA Peace Prize: Historic Win?

In the absence of the Nobel he covets, Donald Trump was awarded the very first “FIFA Peace Prize”during the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony in Washington.

The American president received a medal from the hands of Fifa boss Gianni Infantino after the broadcast of a video announcing this decision and listing the mediation efforts led by the billionaire. “This is what we want from a leader”said the head of Fifa, listing the peace agreements signed under the leadership of Donald Trump.

“This is one of the great honors of my life”commented the American president, in a speech of rare brevity, after putting the medal around his neck. He had just before said ” deserve “ this distinction.

Rification between Trump and Infantino

Fifa announced in November the creation of this prize, intended to reward “the enormous efforts of individuals who unite people and bring hope to future generations”. There was no doubt that the American president would be the first winner.

The human rights NGO Human Rights Watch deplored in a press release on Friday that there had been no “no transparency” around this choice. She announced that she had asked Fifa “a list of candidates, judges, criteria”but did not get a response.

Since his return to power in January, the Republican president has shown great closeness with the boss of Fifa, whom he has received several times at the White House.

Donald Trump claims to have resolved no less than eight conflicts in the world since his inauguration, in particular negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza.

Experts, however, consider this figure to be exaggerated, either because its intervention has been non-existent or minimal in certain peace processes, or because its mediation efforts have not, in certain cases, really put an end to armed clashes.

Consolation du Nobel

Donald Trump nevertheless believes he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, which this year went to Venezuelan opponent María Corina Machado.

Among other consolation prizes, the American president has already been appointed head of a “council for peace” responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Gaza agreement, and he has just given his name to a “Peace Institute” sitting in Washington.

The democratic opposition and a number of human rights associations accuse the billionaire of pursuing a policy that is more bellicose than peaceful, by deploying the army in certain American cities, by increasing the expulsions of migrants or by launching strikes against boats in the Caribbean Sea.

If he wants to be “president of peace”Donald Trump is also a leader fascinated by military power, who insisted that the US Department of Defense be renamed to “Ministry of War”.
