Baník Ostrava Advances in MOL Cup After Penalty Shootout Against Hradec Králové

Hradec Králové, Czech Republic – Baník Ostrava secured a hard-fought victory over FC Hradec Králové in the quarterfinal of the Czech Cup, advancing to the semifinals after a 6-5 penalty shootout win following a 0-0 draw through 120 minutes of play. The match, played on March 4, 2026, at the Malšovická aréna, saw both teams battle to a standstill before the drama unfolded from the penalty spot. The result means Baník Ostrava joins Jablonec and Mladá Boleslav in the semifinal draw.

First-Half Dominance, Unconverted Chances for Hradec Králové

Hradec Králové coach David Horejš felt his team’s strong first-half performance laid the foundation for what ultimately became a heartbreaking defeat. “A lot was foreshadowed in the first half, when we were clearly the better side, but we couldn’t convert that into a lead,” Horejš stated after the match. The home side created numerous opportunities, with Ondřej Mihálik, Václav Pilař, and Adam Vlkanova consistently testing the Baník Ostrava goalkeeper, Tomáš Jedlička.

Central to Hradec Králové’s attacking efforts was captain Vladimír Darida, a veteran midfielder who continues to be a key figure for the club. Darida, who returned to Hradec Králové in 2025 after a stint with Aris, orchestrated much of the team’s offensive play. A potential goal in the 23rd minute, created by a precise cross from Darida to Daniel Horák, was disallowed after Horák was judged to have handled the ball.

Second-Half Shift and Physical Toll

The complexion of the match changed after halftime, with Baník Ostrava gaining a foothold. Ondřej Smetana, the Baník coach, made several substitutions at the break, bringing on fresh legs that appeared to disrupt Hradec Králové’s rhythm. “Baník’s substitutions helped them. Quality players came on, and our performance gradually declined,” Horejš explained. “Some of our players were pushing their limits – Darida and Čihák, for example. They were coming off a game in Liberec and then had to play another 120 minutes.”

Horejš highlighted the physical demands placed on his players, particularly Darida, who has recently been recalled to the Czech national team. The demanding schedule clearly took a toll as the match wore on.

Limited Options from the Bench

While Baník Ostrava had offensive options available even during extra time, Hradec Králové found themselves with a depleted bench. “Basically, there were only defenders available. There was no one left to bring on up front,” Horejš noted. Despite this, he opted to introduce Daniel Trubač specifically for the penalty shootout, but Trubač ultimately missed his spot kick.

“He had minor problems in Liberec, but we knew we’d bring him on purely for penalties. He’s a lad who isn’t afraid to take responsibility. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for him,” Horejš said.

Missed Opportunity to Host the Final

The defeat is particularly disappointing for Hradec Králové given that the MOL Cup final will be held at their home stadium, the Malšovická aréna. “We weren’t thinking about it during the match, but it was our dream. That dream has now evaporated. But I can’t fault the lads. There were some great things going forward, only a lack of precision in the final phase,” Horejš conceded.

Pitch Conditions Draw Criticism

Adding to the frustration, both Horejš and goalkeeper Adam Zadražil voiced concerns about the state of the pitch. Similar issues were reported in a recent match between Jablonec and Slavia Prague, with the area in front of the benches being particularly poor, consisting more of mud than grass.

“That’s not a pitch, that’s mud! You saw how Vlkanova wanted to finish and the ball bounced a meter in the air,” Horejš exclaimed. Zadražil echoed these sentiments, stating, “The pitch got worse and worse. But it’s not an excuse, we both had the same conditions.”

Despite the challenging conditions and a valiant effort, Hradec Králové will not have the opportunity to lift the MOL Cup trophy on their home turf this season. The sting of this missed opportunity will likely linger for some time.

What’s Next for Hradec Králové?

Hradec Králové will now turn their attention back to league play. Vladimír Darida and his teammates will need to quickly regroup and refocus as they continue their Czech First League campaign. The team’s next fixture is yet to be announced, but updates will be available on the club’s official website.
