Sporting 0-2 Bayern Munich: Match Report & Analysis

Sporting 0-2 Bayern Munich: Match Report & Analysis

December 9, 2025 by Aiko Tanaka

Sporting lost this Tuesday at Bayern Munich 3-1, in a match on the sixth round of the Champions League league stage, in which they still had an advantage.

At the Allianz Arena, in Munich, the Bavarian team was the first to cause danger. Shot by Harry Kane, from outside the area, with the ball going over the goal post to Rui Silva. Shortly after, Lennart Karl introduced the ball into Sporting’s goal, but after VAR analysis, the goal was disallowed due to Gnabry being offside.

The Germans set up close to Sporting’s area and had two dangerous situations. First by Lennart Karl with the shot going wide, then by Olise, who crossed from the right into the area, found space to shoot, but Matheus Reis was in the path of the ball.

Bayern continued to sit in the Sporting midfield and Gnabry made a run down the left, but the cross-shot went across the bottom line. In response, Sporting won a corner, but Matheus Reis headed the ball over the top.

Close to half an hour, a shot crossed from the left by Serge Gnabry for a great save by Rui Silva. In the 31st minute, Catamo took off on the right, crossing for Suárez, but Tah anticipated and almost deceived Neuer, who avoided the first goal with a two-step save. In response, on the other side of the field, it was Rui Silva who shined with an excellent shot from Harry Kane’s perfectly placed shot.

When Alisson lost the ball in the Leonine midfield, Bayern almost scored. Harry Kane hit the right post of the goal from Rui Silva’s guard after having taken Fresneda out of the way, managing to shoot from outside the area. In the 45th minute, Rui Silva prevents Lennart Karl from scoring. The young German did what Matheus Reis wanted and shot for a great save by the Sporting goalkeeper.

The first 45 minutes were, unsurprisingly, dominated by the Bavarians, with a strong offensive flow and with Rui Silva keeping the Lions goal to zero with a handful of good saves.

At the beginning of the second half, the first shot belonged to Sporting, Alisson shot wide of Neuer’s goal when he could have crossed for Luis Suárez.

First the warning, then the goal. Excellent ball handling by João Simões, on the left side, with the number 52 shirt crossing into the area, where Fresneda was waiting, in anticipation Kimmich ended up putting the ball into his own goal.

Rui Borges changed the team and brought in Ricardo Mangas to replace Alisson. But before that, Bayern Munich equalized through Serge Gnabry. Corner taken by Michael Olise, on the right side of the attack, with Gnabry, unmarked, touching the second post.

Four minutes later, in the 69th minute, Bayern turned the score around. Triangulation of the Bavarians, with Laimer crossing for Karl and the young prodigy shooting hard with Rui Silva still touching the ball, but unable to avoid the goal.

In yet another set piece, Bayern extended their lead in the 77th minute. Kimich’s free kick was sent to the second post where Gnabry headed the ball for Tah to find the back of the net from a helpless Rui Silva. Rui Borges was once again changing the team, Eduardo Quaresma and Geny Catamo left, Ioannidis and Vagiannidis entered.

Towards the end, Luis Suárez had the opportunity to reduce it, but the Colombian’s shot collided with the German defense. Vagiannidis worked well on the right, crossed to the central area where Suárez appeared to shoot, off balance, but the ball deflected off Upamecano.

With this defeat, Sporting now falls to ninth place, with 10 points, thus leaving it outside the direct qualification zone for the round of 16, while the Germans provisionally reach second place, with 15 points, the same as leaders Arsenal, who will still play their game in this round.
