The 172 places available for field hockey at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games were split evenly between men and women[1]. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments consist of 38 athletes each, while the doubles tournaments will consist of 16 pairs. The qualification process was made official on 10 December 2025 by the International Olympic Committee, with an update on 15 December[2].
The timeline indicated by the International Federation is as follows:

All athletes must comply with the provisions of the Olympic Charter currently in force, including, but not limited to, Rule 41 (Nationality of competitors) and Rule 43 (World Anti-Doping Code and Code of the Olympic Movement on the Prevention of Competition Manipulation). Only athletes who respect the Olympic Charter can participate in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Athletes must also meet the following criteria:
- All athletes must have participated in a minimum of three tournaments in the respective discipline valid for the LA28 Olympic Ranking during the Olympic qualification period (3 May 2027 – 30 April 2028). This requirement also applies to universal seats and Continental Representation seats, but not to seats reserved for the host country.
- All athletes must be in the LA28 Olympic Ranking as of May 2, 2028. This requirement does not apply to places reserved for the host country.
