“The Reggio community embraces the loss of one of its most illustrious figures. The passing of President Franco Pontorieri not only marks the end of the earthly existence of an extraordinary man, but leaves a void in the institutional, cultural and legal fabric of our city and the entire country”. This is what the mayor of Reggio Calabria Giuseppe Falcomatà stated in a note expressing the condolences of the city institutions for the passing of the jurist Franco Pontorieri, former president of the Court of Reggio Calabria, President of the second civil section of the Court of Cassation and honorary President of the Supreme Court.
“President Pontorieri was a servant of the State in the highest and noblest sense of the term – stated the mayor – his career, dotted with prestigious summits, tells the story of a jurist of extremely fine acumen. As President of the Court of Reggio Calabria, he led the courthouse in complex years, representing a bastion of legality and firmness. His rise to the top of the judiciary, to the point of covering the role of President of the second civil section of the Court of Cassation and subsequently that of Honorary President of the Supreme Court, testifies to the undisputed value of his contribution to Italian jurisprudence. A man from Reggio who was able to raise the name of our city high in the most important halls of the Republic”.
“However – added the mayor – the debt of gratitude that Reggio Calabria owes him goes beyond the courtrooms and touches the beating heart of another institutional pillar of our community such as the Mediterranean University. Pontorieri was, to all intents and purposes, one of the founding fathers of our University, first as Commissioner of the IUSA (State University Institute of Architecture), laying the first stones of what would become a flagship of academic culture of the South, then guiding with foresight the very delicate phase of the soon-to-be established Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria as Commissioner, leading it into a period of great expansion and growth, during which he subsequently also held the role of professor of Civil Procedural Law”.
“With Francesco Pontorieri we lose a beacon, a man who was able to combine the rigor of the Toga, balance and extraordinary humanity, with the passion for the education of the young generations. His vision contributed to building the prospect of a university city in Reggio, giving our young people the opportunity to complete their educational path here too, in their land”.
“On my personal behalf, on behalf of the municipal administration and the entire Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria – concluded the mayor – I express my deepest condolences to the Pontorieri family and to the many who were fortunate enough to know and collaborate with President Pontorieri. May we extend our closeness to them and the promise that the moral and cultural legacy left by the President will not be lost, but will continue to live on in the institutions he helped build and in the students he trained”.
