Diniz on Vegetti’s Reaction: Atlético x Vasco Sub Drama

Coach Fernando Diniz commented on striker Pablo Vegetti’s reaction when he was substituted during the
Atlético’s rout over Vasco
this Sunday afternoon (7).

After Hugo Moura was sent off in the 31st minute of the game, Diniz removed the Argentine from the field and placed full-back Leandrinho to protect the Vasco defense. Vegetti, however, didn’t like leaving the field, he kicked glasses,
he swore and threw his boot at the bench
.

Diniz softened the episode, said he had already spoken to the attacker and stated that everything was resolved between the two.

“Nothing happened, he may have been nervous about leaving, about having a player sent off. There are a few reasons. I’ve already spoken to him and everything is resolved, there’s nothing. He was an option to leave. In this game there wasn’t much point in leaving him,” Diniz said at a press conference.

The coach stated that Vegetti is an option for the Copa do Brasil and that he did not want to expose the player against Atlético.

“He is a player who is a clear option to enter or play in the Copa do Brasil. I wasn’t going to expose Vegetti in this game, with one player less, where we would need to push the team back, score a lot and exploit speed. It didn’t make much sense, that was my vision. And he understood that perfectly”, he concluded.

International classification for Vasco

Even after suffering a defeat, Vasco guaranteed a place in an international competition in 2026. Now, the team awaits the final result of the Copa do Brasil to find out whether they will play in the Libertadores — if they win the title — or whether they will compete in the Copa Sudamericana, taking advantage of the extra place in the Brasileirão if Corinthians, Cruzeiro or Fluminense are champions.

If they had finished the championship in 15th or 16th, Vasco, who finished 14th, would have been left out of the South American Championship.
