SV Darmstadt made an impressive comeback after the DFB Cup defeat and made it to third place in the relegation zone in the 2nd league. The South Hesse team defeated Karlsruher SC in a fast-paced evening game 3:2 (1:1) and thus moved into the promotion zone. For the KSC, however, the downward trend continued with their fourth defeat in a row.
Marco Richter (45th + 1), Isac Lidberg (48th) and Matej Maglica (63rd) scored the goals for the Darmstadt team. Defender Maglica had put the KSC in the lead with an own goal (38th), Fabian Schleusener scored to make it 2-2 (60th). In a wild final phase, the Karlsruhe team failed to force a point.
The spectators in the stadium at Böllenfalltor saw a fast-paced and exciting game in which the home team – who had lost 2-0 to SC Freiburg in the DFB Cup during the week – largely dominated the action. Nevertheless, KSC initially took the lead because Darmstadt’s Maglica headed the ball into their own goal. Richter responded to the brief shock in stoppage time in the first half with a free kick shot in which the visiting goalkeeper Hans-Christian Bernat did not look good.
After the break, coach Florian Kohfeldt’s hosts quickly followed up with a goal from Lidberg. Just in the phase in which Darmstadt was pushing for the preliminary decision, Schleusener equalized after a dream pass. A few minutes later, SVD professional Maglica made up for his mishap with his own goal and headed to take the lead again.
