Chinese Basketball History: Key Events & Tianjin Launch

The “Chinese Basketball Chronicle”, planned and organized by the Chinese Basketball Association and commissioned by the School of History of Nankai University, held a grand launch ceremony on December 28 at the original site of the Tianjin Youth Association.

As the first volume of “Chinese Basketball Chronicle”, “Major Events” has a total of about 550,000 words. It systematically sorts out and presents the major events, key figures and iconic achievements of Chinese basketball from 1895 to 2020. It reflects the changes in Chinese society, politics, economy and culture, and clearly presents the development context of Chinese basketball. It not only fills the gap in the research of Chinese basketball history, but also provides a valuable historical reference for future basketball development. It is an authoritative chronicle with historical, academic and social value. “Chronicle of Major Events” brings together the efforts of many experts and scholars in the basketball and history circles. It took three years to compile, spanned five rounds of revisions, and nine revisions of the draft. From the combing and combing of original archives, to the textual research and analysis of controversial historical facts, from the re-examination of the time when basketball was introduced in 1895, to the rigorous verification of the names of figures during the Republic of China, the editor has a rigorous historical attitude and method to find a balance between history and basketball. The number of experts, scholars, institutions and managers who participated in the writing, review, proofreading and discussion is the largest number of participants in Chinese basketball history books to date. This is also the first sports history jointly compiled by an individual sports association and the history school of a comprehensive university. On the basis of ensuring the professional accuracy of basketball vocabulary, it fully adopts historical professional research methods. It is an innovation in sports history research methods. Therefore, this book has high professionalism, authority and historical value.

“Chinese Basketball Chronicles” is jointly published by People’s Sports Publishing House and Nankai University Press.

At the launch ceremony, Li Yuanwei, chief expert of the Chinese Basketball Hall of Fame Committee and chief expert of the editorial board of “China Basketball Chronicle”, Zhang Xiaolin, editor-in-chief of People’s Sports Publishing House, and Yu Xinzhong, dean of the School of History of Nankai University, delivered speeches on behalf of the editorial board, publishing house and editing team respectively. They pointed out that the compilation of “Chinese Basketball Chronicles” is of far-reaching significance and arduous tasks. The publication of the first volume of “Major Events” not only marks the phased results of this major cultural project, but also is a sincere gift to the 130th anniversary of the birth of Chinese basketball. Later, together with Liang Qi, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Nankai University, Li Shan, deputy director of the Tianjin Sports Bureau, Zhang Jiansuo, chairman of the Tianjin Youth Association Council, and Chinese Basketball Hall of Fame members Chen Daohong, Kuang Lubin, Song Xiaobo and Zheng Haixia, they jointly unveiled the “Chinese Basketball Chronicle”. Yao Ming delivered a video message to congratulate the launch of “China Basketball Chronicle”.

The launch ceremony of “Chinese Basketball Chronicles” was held during the “Innovation and Development of Sports History Research and Academic Symposium to Commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the Birth of Chinese Basketball”. Participants in the seminar included Zhang Yuanlong, a descendant of Mr. Zhang Boling and former member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Xu Jicheng, vice chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, Yao Songping, former president of the Shanghai Institute of Sport, Chi Jian, former deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Beijing Sport University, Wang Jiahong, a professor at Suzhou University, Xu Guoqi, a professor at the University of Hong Kong, and Bai Nianen and Zhang Qing, members of the expert panel of the Football Hall of Fame, Zhang Hongtao, Secretary of the Party Committee of Rongcheng Wenjian Group, Wang Kang, President of Nankai University Press, Zhai Mingrui, Secretary of the Party Committee of Nankai University School of History, as well as nearly a hundred experts, scholars and industry representatives from universities, scientific research institutions and sports circles across the country.
