Belgian Youth Star: Loan Move Struggles

19-year-old Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi extended his contract with Sunderland AFC last summer, but went looking for more playing opportunities with Scottish side Falkirk FC. However, the Belgian youth international has not yet enjoyed his visit there.

The tall Samuel-Ogunsuyi is known as a great talent at Sunderland. Régis Le Bris took him on the bench several times last season and even gave him his debut in the FA Cup against Stoke City. Sunderland and Samuel-Ogunsuyi were only too happy that he extended his contract last summer until 2028. Falkirk saw his opportunity to take over the goalkeeper on loan.

The Scottish club is not doing badly this season and is seventh in the Premiership. In recent weeks, coach John McGlynn has consistently given preference to Brian Graham’s experience as a striker, meaning our compatriot has only made three appearances since the beginning of November. On Saturday he played the final quarter at Falkirk, which lost 1-0 to Dundee FC.

However, in total, Samuel-Ogunsuyi has only played 220 minutes for Falkirk this season, in which he has not yet scored. Last season, our compatriot played fifteen times for Sunderland’s U21 team. That already earned him interest from Liverpool FC last summer. For the time being, however, we continue to wait for a breakthrough, and especially playing opportunities in the Scottish Premiership.
