Allen Lazard: Jets Release & Future Outlook

The New York Jets have ended the last link of the sad Aaron Rodgers era, releasing wide receiver Allen Lazard, a source confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Lazard has been sidelined for the past four games and has asked to be released in hopes of joining a contending team, ESPN has learned. The Jets, who wanted to evaluate their young receivers, made Lazard’s wish come true.

He failed to live up to expectations after signing a four-year, $44 million contract in 2023, which was expected to help convince Rodgers to sign in New York. Lazard and Rodgers developed a connection during their five seasons together with the Green Bay Packers.

Lazard appeared to be on his way out last offseason, especially after Rodgers left in March, but he took an $8.75 million pay cut to stay with the Jets. He was to be a free agent at the end of the season since the Jets had agreed to cancel the final year of his agreement.

In three campaigns with the Jets, Lazard amassed 70 receptions and 911 yards, as well as eight touchdowns. His usage was limited to 250 games this season. He caught 10 balls for 70 yards.

The Jets will continue to use Adonai Mitchell, John Metchie III and Isaiah Williams as their primary receivers.

No. 1 Garrett Wilson has missed the last five games after knee surgery. Coach Aaron Glenn said he hopes Wilson plays again this season, but that seems unlikely.
