Zaragoza transformed its historic city center into a massive open-air sports hub as the Día del Deporte en la Calle concluded following a weekend of free community programming, according to local event reports. Organized by the Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, the two-day festival brought together 59 sports entities and federations to host 68 distinct workshops across the Plaza del Pilar and surrounding areas, drawing participants of all ages and athletic abilities.
The event, which maintained the expanded two-day format introduced the previous year, delivered more than 13 hours of active programming across Saturday and Sunday. Sessions ran daily from 10:30 to 13:30 local time and resumed from 16:30 to 20:00 local time. City sports councilor Félix Brocate formally presented the initiative alongside Guillermo Ramos, president of Special Olympics Aragón, and Patxi Díez.
Inclusive athletics formed a centerpiece of the 2026 edition as Special Olympics Aragón integrated the street sports festival into its 35th-anniversary commemorations. The weekend opened with a ceremonial flag parade featuring more than 300 athletes, family members, and volunteers. Participants traveled from regional centers including Huesca, Teruel, Calatayud, and Zaragoza, marching with the Special Olympics torch from Plaza España up Calle Alfonso to the Plaza del Pilar. The torch remained housed in a dedicated cauldron in the plaza throughout the weekend as a symbol of inclusive sport.
Programming spanned six primary categories designed to connect residents with diverse physical disciplines: recreation and leisure, educational sports, base and federated sports, inclusive programs for vulnerable groups, intergenerational activities, and health initiatives. Attendees sampled more than 40 distinct activities ranging from traditional team sports like basketball 3×3, rugby, and handball to specialized pursuits including pickleball, lacrosse, orientación, combat sports, aquavolei, and fitness sessions with musical accompaniment.
