[17th (Reuters)]- Carlos Alcaraz (22, Spain), number one in the men’s tennis world rankings, has terminated his contract with his coach of seven years, Juan Carlos Ferrero (45). Both parties made the announcement on the 17th.
From the age of 15, Alcaraz was coached by former world No. 1 and fellow tennis player Ferrero, and quickly rose to become a leading figure in the tennis world. At the age of 21, he won his first title at Roland Garros in 2024, becoming the youngest male player to win a Grand Slam title on all three surfaces: grass, hard, and clay.
This season, he achieved a total of eight wins, including victories at the French Open and the United States, and achieved No. 1 in the annual rankings for the second time in his career. The honors he achieved with Mr. Ferrero were 24 wins, including six titles in the Grand Slam tournaments.
In a statement, Alcaraz thanked Ferrero for making a childhood dream a reality. “This journey began when I was just a child, and ever since then you have shared an amazing journey on and off the court,” Alcaraz said in a statement. “We have reached the pinnacle, and if we were to go our separate ways in our athletic careers, it had to be at the pinnacle.”
Ferrero said on social media that he wanted to continue coaching, telling Alcaraz: “Despite the challenges, we were a great team and I’m sure we will continue to have great success.”
