In Getxo, hours count to experience a unique event. It is not for less. One of the most representative teams in the municipality, CD Getxo, which plays in the Biscayan Honor Division – the sixth category at the national level – will receive an elite team, such as Deportivo Alavés. The historic event will be this Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in Gobela, Arenas’ usual stadium, since they could not enable extra stands in Fadura due to security problems. In any case, the match remains just as attractive for the players, coaching staff, managers and fans of this historic club, who have to look back more than forty years to remember their last match against a First Division team.
Iñaki Gerediaga, president of Getxo, acknowledges to EL CORREO that he is experiencing these previous days “tremendously stressed.” And at the last minute many questions are arising for them to resolve that they are not used to. “At home they don’t even see me,” he admits. It must be taken into account that the board is made up of ten people who must take care of all the procedures involved in a meeting of these dimensions. Furthermore, the leader of the Getxotarras comments that there are only three who do not work, so they must solve the different and innovative subjects among a few.
One of the sections that caused the most headaches at the time was trying to play this duel in Fadura. “Our idea was always to play in Fadura and even more so when the Federation gave us the space to hold the match, but later, with the inconveniences that arose, we had no choice but to go to Gobela,” says Gerediaga. The main problem for them not being able to play this match on their field was the impediment to placing extra stands due to safety problems. This, together with the fact that the Federation does not allow standing audiences, tipped the balance in favor of the change of scenario.
Even so, the president indicates that “Gobela is close, in the same municipality, we are receiving exquisite treatment from the City Council, so we cannot object of any kind.” Likewise, he highlights that “I think there will be a full house.” From Getxo they hope that the nearly 1,500 seats available in the stadium will be sold out. Which will be a great push when trying to make a splash.
«Unique opportunity»
«The players are ecstatic with motivation, it is a unique opportunity for them. If it were due to desire or impetus, we would surely win, but it is more complicated taking into account the difference in category, what is assured is that they will give everything they have to try to win,” says the president.
This confrontation is not only a great social and sporting event, but it also implies important benefits for the coffers of the Right Bank entity. Just the fact of competing in the Copa del Rey already entails an economic prize, to which must be added everything raised at the box office and other similar aspects. Iñaki Gerediaga calculates that “this Cup match will account for almost 20%, around 17, of our budget.” This, for example, could be used to “hire a key player for a certain position if necessary,” the president slips. Something that in other years would be unthinkable for an entity like Fadura.
Although it is still a long way off due to the great obstacle ahead, Gerediaga says that being able to advance to the round against Alavés “would be a dream come true.” In that case, due to the shape of this edition’s draw, its next rival could be Real Sociedad, which it calls “a complete sporting and economic success.”
