Caldas Basketball: Champions Excluded from National Games | minDeportes Controversy

SEMANA learned this Wednesday, October 22, of a complaint from the parents of a group of minors in the department of Caldas who were winners to participate in the 2025 National Intercollegiate Games, but they assured who were excluded by the Ministry of Sports.

The students belong to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Minor Seminary Educational Institute, who make up the 3×3 men’s youth basketball team.

Yorly Xiomara Gamboa Castaño, who represents the affected parents, He denounced that the ministry acted in a way that was not correct.

“The minors Gerónimo Mosquera, Sebastián Guzmán, Juan José Obando and Santiago González were national champions the previous year in the youth 3×3 men’s basketball category, representing the Department of Caldas. This year, at just 15 years old, they were crowned champions again, this time in the youth category, despite competing with young people up to 18 years old.“Gamboa explained to this magazine.

The parents denounce that the Ministry of Sports recognized the team’s victory through Information Bulletin No. 13, where they accredited their national classification. However, surprisingly, on September 14, 2025, Bulletin No. 14 was published, in which Caldas was removed from the competition and Tolima was included in its place.

“For no known reason, The ministry decided to remove Caldas and include Tolima, violating the rights to sport, participation and the free development of the personality of our children, “They were already excited about their participation,” said the representative.

In the midst of all this controversy, the parents filed a guardianship before the court that was ruled in their favor, where they allege the violation of their fundamental rights.

“The court decreed as a precautionary measure that, on one calendar day, The ministry had to once again include the Caldas men’s 3×3 youth basketball team to participate in the 2025 National Intercollegiate Games”explained Gamboa Castaño.

However, this did not happen and The minors are still out of the competition and this led them to file an incident of contempt.

“The Caldas Sports Secretariat informed us that they are still waiting for the registration platform to be enabled to register the children and deliver the uniforms, but so far the Ministry has refused to do so,” he stated.

The concern increases because, according to Gamboa, the competitions begin tomorrow, and the team has not yet been officially registered.

“This causes serious harm to our children and sends a bad message to the children and youth of the country, who trust that the State processes are planned and respectful,” said the woman.
