Mexico will reinstate the promotion to the First Division from the 2026-27 season confirmed on Thursday the Mexican Football Federation after the ruling of the Deporting Arbitration Court (TAS) was known before the claim of six teams of the second category.
The Atlético La Paz teams, Morelia, Cancun FC, Miners of Zacatecas, Venados FC and black lions of the UDG appealed to the organ that settled sports controversies, looking for the ascent to resume in the 2025-26 season, but the tas failed on Thursday against him.
The owners of the First Division abolished the promotion and descent in 2020, in principle for five seasons, but one of those was interrupted by the pandemic. The teams in the lower category claimed that that campaign be taken into account.
“The General Assembly in accordance with its powers, at the time, will determine the rules for the execution of the agreement taken in 2020,” said the governing body of Mexican football in a statement.
Although Mexican leaders pledged to reinstate the ascent, it is still uncertain if the return of the descent will also be approved. In the past, the leaders handled the possibility of expanding the first division of 18 to 20 teams.
It is also necessary to determine the rules for second teams to aspire to a site in the highest category. The Federation has insisted for years that it has to certify the teams before each start of the season to approve a probable promotion.
Until now, only Atlantean, a team of great tradition in Mexican football, has that certification.
Although they lost in their original claim for restoring the rise immediately, the six teams that came to the TAs celebrated the ruling and confirmation of the return of the ascent for the summer of 2027.
“The reactivation of this model represents new opportunities, not only for clubs but also for players, technical bodies, hobbies, sponsors and for the integral growth of sport,” said the six clubs in a joint statement.
When losing the ruling, the six second division teams must pay 12,000 Swiss francs (about 15 thousand dollars) to the Mexican Federation to cover the legal cost of the process.
The last team in promoting to the highest category was Atlético de San Luis at the end of the 2018-19 season.
