A German football legend is set in Munich. Many prominent guests come to the inauguration of the statue of Franz Beckenbauer’s died last year. The artist receives applause from the guests.
Before the Munich football arena, a monument was unveiled 20 months after the death of Franz Beckenbauer in honor of the former football “emperor”. It shows the German football legend in sports dress with a ball on the foot. “This monument is a piece of DNA of FC Bayern bronze,” said club president Herbert Hainer in his speech: “Life is transient, football is fleeting, but remains legends.”
The statue is on the Esplanade leading to the stadium only a few meters next to that of Germany’s top striker Gerd Müller. Thousands of fans will now meet her on games on their way to the arena.
The “bomber” Müller, who died in 2021 at the age of 75, once played successfully with the Libero Beckenbauer at FC Bayern Munich and in the German national team. This would have turned 80 on Thursday.
Many companions from Hoeneß to Matthew
In addition to Heidi Beckenbauer, numerous former teammates and companions such as Uli Hoeneß, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Klaus Augenthaler or Paul Breitner and former players took part in the world championship headed by 1990 by Beckenbauer.
This included, at the time, the then captain Lothar Matthäus, Stefan Reuter, Pierre Littbarski, Raimond Aumann or Hansi Pflügler. Former DFB President Wolfsgang Niersbach was also present.
Beckenbauer died on January 7, 2024 at the age of 78. He was the formative figure of FC Bayern Munich, only as a player and later in various management functions like as a long -time president. He became world champion as a player and coach. And he was President of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. “What a trip – and what a life story,” said Hainer.
As with Müller, the Beckenbauer monument goes back to an initiative of the Kurt Landau Foundation. She created the Italian Matilde Romagnoli. The artist living in Munich received applause from the guests.
