Greek Basketball Federation President Arrested in Match-Fixing Raid
Greek authorities arrested Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) President Vangelis Liolios alongside a referee, three former referees, and a businessman in a sweeping corruption investigation that police say targeted a match-fixing ring operating across roughly 50 games between 2016 and 2026. The probe, which investigators trace back to an April 2026 formal complaint filed by Maroussi BC, uncovered nearly €930,000 in hidden cash during residential raids on officials.
The investigation into passive and active bribery, kickbacks, and match-fixing involves multiple tiers of Greek basketball, spanning from school championships to top-tier Basket League fixtures. Investigators have gathered evidence including eight witness statements and digital messages concerning agreements to alter match outcomes in exchange for payments or favors. One recovered message shows an individual asking shortly before a kickoff how many players should be ejected through accumulated fouls during the match. The case also encompasses an incident during a fixture held outside Greece where the conduct of Greek referees was sanctioned by FIBA. Arrests made in connection with the sweep include active referee Vaso Tsaroucha, detained at Athens airport upon arriving on a flight from Istanbul, Turkey, after officiating an international match, alongside two former referees who serve on the EOK Central Refereeing Committee, the body responsible for training, evaluating, and assigning referees in the Greek league. Authorities also issued a search and arrest warrant for businessman Yorgos Mavraganis, a close associate and friend of the federation president.
Cash Seizures and Custody Decisions in Athens
Police searches of suspect properties yielded €820,000 in cash at the home of Ilías Korimilas, €102,000 at the residence of another referee, and €8,000 at the home of Liolios. Korimilas contends through bank documentation that his cash stems from his professional activity as an official in international matches. Despite the defense, Greek courts placed Korimilas and Liolios in pre-trial detention alongside Liolios associate Yorgos Mavraganis, while Vaso Tsaruja and Tasos Piliodis were placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring.
Investigators note that Vaso Tsaroucha is linked to thirteen fixed matches played between 2018 and 2026, while Ilías Korimilas has been flagged for nine alleged referee bribes and former referee Tasos Piliodis was singled out by a case witness. All three have rejected the accusations and denied any irregular behavior. Smaller amounts of money were additionally discovered in the homes of other suspects, while authorities continue working to clarify whether these funds originate from illicit activities.
Government Funding Suspended and Interim Leadership Installed
In response to the arrests, Greek Sports Yannis Vrutsis suspended all state subsidies to the EOK and ordered a financial and administrative audit of the federation’s past three fiscal years. Liolios submitted his resignation from the EOK to clear the path for the investigation, denying any wrongdoing and calling the case an organized effort to damage his professional reputation. Ánguelos Papanikolau stepped in as interim director to run the governing body ahead of scheduled elections on December 20.

Following the arrests, the EOK held an extraordinary meeting of its board of directors to brief members on the ongoing judicial proceedings.
Panathinaikos Allegations and European Credibility Concerns
The investigation has drawn sharp reactions from top Greek clubs, including Panathinaikos, which issued a statement accusing specific individuals of imposing “monstrous officiating” that cost the club several titles within what it termed a corrupt system. Investigators are reviewing match logs ranging from school tournaments to the top-tier Basket League, scrutinizing witness statements and digital messages concerning deliberate tactical fouls and score manipulation.
Panathinaikos denounced the situation as a corrupt system that violates what we love most: basketball
, according to the club’s leadership.
