Panathinaikos head coach Zeljko Obradovic declined to comment on a bribery and match-fixing probe in Greek basketball following his team’s 85-79 EuroLeague victory over Spanish side Baskonia. The investigation has resulted in six arrests, notably including Greek Basketball Federation Vangelis Liolios and EuroLeague referee Vasiliki Tsaroucha.
Obradovic Rejects Speculation As Probe Widens Across Europe
Speaking at the post-match press conference at OAKA, Obradovic addressed reporters amid scrutiny over the arrests. The veteran tactician noted that the allegations have generated widespread media attention not just locally, but internationally. “This is not only here in Greece; it is like this all over Europe,” Obradovic stated. “Some people even call me before I learn what is going on. How can I make any comment? Because I really do not know what is happening. This is not the right time to make any comment.” Obradovic emphasized acquaintances abroad had reached out to him regarding the scandal, reinforcing his stance that speculating without direct knowledge serves no purpose.
Squad Management And Roster Concerns After Baskonia Victory
Shifting focus from off-court investigations to on-court performance, Obradovic evaluated the physical condition of Kendrick Nunn, who recently returned from a lengthy injury layoff. “Nunn was out for a long time,” Obradovic said. “We are using him, but that does not mean he is 100 percent ready. We have to be careful about this, and I talk with my technical staff every day.” The head coach added that Nunn’s playing time is being managed carefully while the player maintains a strong individual work ethic. Alongside Nunn's reintegration, Obradovic pointed out that Sylvain Francisco and Nunn combined for 16 of the team's 23 total assists—with Francisco supplying 11 and Nunn contributing 5—though he stressed that collective discipline must supersede individual talent as Panathinaikos plays its EuroLeague schedule.
Obradovic Praises Lessort Basketball IQ but Notes Focus Issues
Obradovic also assessed Mathias Lessort following the win against Baskonia, highlighting both the player’s high basketball IQ and his moments of lost focus. “He understands basketball very well and loves to play,” Obradovic observed. “There were many positive aspects to his game, but from time to time he lost his concentration. That is the most important issue for him.” The Panathinaikos boss reiterated that despite possessing a deep and talented roster, the squad must maintain defensive and offensive cohesion from the opening tip-off moving forward in the competition.
