Like a perfectly executed smash in badminton, Tenzul El Rosario has shattered barriers, achieving a feat previously unseen in canary Islands sports history. The team’s undefeated championship run has propelled them into Primera Nacional Plata, the third-highest tier of Spanish badminton. this victory is akin to a minor league baseball team making it to AAA – a significant step closer to the big leagues.

Cabrera’s dedication is all-encompassing.I do everything that needs to be done,even administrative tasks, he explains. His journey with badminton began in childhood but reignited in his early twenties when he pursued badminton instruction as part of his university studies.I got hooked, he recalls with enthusiasm.

Cabrera’s commitment to the sport and the team is reminiscent of legendary coaches like John Wooden, who built dynasties through unwavering dedication and a holistic approach to player progress. Just as wooden emphasized fundamentals, Cabrera has instilled a strong foundation in his players, enabling them to compete at a higher level.

Cabrera’s coaching journey started in 1998 in El Rosario, where he began teaching badminton at Club Jardín del Mar. We started in a covered squash court, adapting a net. Then we marked the court in a fronton court. When El Chorrillo pavilion was built in 2006, the City Council allowed us to use it for a few hours, Cabrera recounts. This humble beginning eventually led to the formation of Tenzul (tenerife-Radazul).

Team badminton is a mixed-gender sport, with each match comprising seven points: two men’s singles, two women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Tenzul prides itself on the parity between its male and female players. The boys and girls are equally good, says the club’s president and coach. Otherwise, we couldn’t have competed so well. The mixed [doubles] is usually very important.

Strategic recruitment also plays a crucial role. This year,we signed a Japanese player and an English player.We finished undefeated and were champions. We have built a compact team. This international flavor adds a unique dimension to Tenzul’s gameplay, mirroring the global nature of modern sports.

However,the future remains uncertain. The coach notes, Now we have to see what’s coming as we are not very sure what we will find. It will depend on the signings that the rest of the teams make,but it is true that the two clubs that had risen last season to Plata ascended this year to Gold. that makes you think that maybe there is not so much difference [in skill level].

Despite their sporting achievements, Tenzul faces a common challenge for emerging sports: visibility. I’m not going to lie. At the time,I was very worried that badminton news would come out,but it costs a lot. Fortunately, little by little, there is a little more interest. The pity is that, no matter how well we do, there are certain sports that we are always at the bottom of the line, the coach concludes.
