Nguyễn Hai Dang faces competitive domestic field to defend title

Defending Champion Faces Heavy Pressure as National Sports Games Badminton Draws Near

Vietnam’s top-ranked men’s badminton player faces an uphill battle to retain his crown when the 10th National Sports Games open later this year, with domestic competition highly competitive. While the reigning champion holds a strong position in the international rankings, domestic challengers and rising youth prospects keep the singles draws unpredictable.

Men Singles Draws Deep Contenders Behind Hai Dang

Nguyen Hai Dang enters the men’s singles tournament as the clear top contender from Ho Chi Minh City, holding the 75th spot in the global rankings. As Vietnam’s highest-ranked male player, he holds a wide margin over domestic rivals on paper, but domestic events rarely follow rankings. Le Duc Phat of the Army delegation stands at 207th globally, while Phan Phuc Thinh of Ho Chi Minh City sits at 209th and veteran Nguyễn Tiến Minh is ranked 248th.

Despite recent injuries disrupting his form, Le Duc Phat remains the biggest challenge to Hai Dang’s defense. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Phan Phuc Thinh arrives with momentum after securing an unexpected run to the second round at the Vietnam Open 2026. Veteran presence adds further unpredictability to the draw. At 43 years old, former world No. 5 Nguyen Tien Minh still shows remarkable skill and experience. Tien Minh claimed the Ho Chi Minh City sports festival title in April after Hai Dang was injured in the final, showing that veteran experience can still succeed against younger fields.

Youth Movements Challenge Established Stars

A fresh wave of young players will test the established hierarchy in the men’s and women’s divisions alike. Tran Hoang Kha and Tran Quoc Khanh, both born in 2006, join Nguyen Tat Duy Loi, born in 2008, in the men’s bracket. On the women’s side, 15-year-old Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen of Dong Nai and 2007-born Bui Bich Phuong of Hanoi step onto the country’s largest multi-sport stage. While international credentials remain light for this cohort, their inclusion lays the basis for a future generational change in the sport.

Thuy Linh Commands the Women Draw

Unlike the volatile men’s field, Nguyen Thuy Linh commands clear favoritism in the women’s singles tournament. Ranked 27th in the world and representing Dong Nai, Thuy Linh combines high-level international experience with advanced technical control. Her primary resistance comes from 34-year-old Vu Thi Trang of Ho Chi Minh City. Once a towering figure in Vietnamese badminton and currently ranked 93rd globally, Trang retains a deeply technical style, though physical conditioning separates her from her peak years.

Schedule and Venue Infrastructure for 2026

The 10th National Sports Games mark the first time Ho Chi Minh City has hosted the country’s premier quadrennial multi-sport event in twenty years. Competition spans 48 sports and 973 medal events across 34 venues, with thirty-one located in Ho Chi Minh City and three distributed across Dong Nai, Dong Thap, and Hanoi. The games draw 36 delegations representing 34 provinces and cities, alongside units from the police and military forces. Organizers project participation from roughly 12,000 athletes, coaches, and officials, supported by 2,000 referees.

While preliminary events such as Muay Thai begin on October 20 ahead of an October 22 opening ceremony, the official main program runs from November 14 through December 12, 2026. The formal opening ceremony takes place on the evening of November 21 at Saigon Riverfront Park, with the closing ceremony scheduled for December 12 at the Phu Tho Sports Hall.
