Court Sentences Man to Prison for Assault and stalking
A 34-year-old man, identified as Mr. A, was sentenced to one year in prison for assaulting his girlfriend and engaging in a pattern of stalking behavior. The Chuncheon District Court, presided over by Deputy Judge Kim Do-hyung, also ordered a 40-hour stalking crime prevention program.
Assault and Intimidation
The court found Mr.A guilty of assaulting his girlfriend, Ms. B, on November 4, 2023. The assault,which occurred in a car parked near her Wonju-si apartment,involved hitting her head and legs,requiring two weeks of medical treatment. The motive, according to the complaint, stemmed from a dispute over tennis costs.
Stalking Behavior
Mr. A’s actions escalated beyond the initial assault. Following a breakup conversation on November 8, 2023, he bombarded Ms.B with relentless dialog. this included:
- 317 text messages
- 69 other messages
- 59 missed calls
This relentless barrage of communication continued for two weeks after the breakup. Further, Mr. A’s actions included placing Pepero sweets in front of Ms. B’s home and using a location tracking app on her phone.He also visited her workplace and demanded the return of a gift.
Court’s Reasoning
The court emphasized the severity of Mr.A’s actions, noting the significant emotional distress caused to Ms. B. the judge highlighted the defendant’s use of a location tracking app and visits to the victim’s workplace as particularly concerning. While Mr. A offered a financial settlement, the court deemed it insufficient given the harm inflicted.
