Hope for a new European indoor title evaporated Friday in Samsun, Turkey, for Lisa Barbelin (24). In the semifinals, the French archer faced a formidable challenge from Russian Nurinisso Makhmudova, competing under a neutral flag. Makhmudova emerged victorious, winning 6-2 (29-29, 30-29, 30-30, 30-29) against the steadfast Mosellane.
Barbelin, bronze medalist at the recent Paris Olympics, appeared to have a commanding lead in the quarterfinals, facing Turkish archer Zeynep Kose. She surged ahead, leading 4-0, then 5-1. However, her momentum faltered. Kose mounted a stunning comeback, forcing a decisive final round.Barbelin’s last attempt fell short, allowing Kose to secure a hard-fought victory (28-19).
Two French Medals?
Barbelin will now compete in the bronze medal match Sunday against dutch archer Ilona hollander. Hollander lost to Victoria Sebastian (6-4), solidifying Sebastian’s status as a key figure in French archery. Sebastian’s bronze medal in Nîmes further cements her position.
A potential second French medal hangs in the balance.A victory for Barbelin would signal a resurgence for French archery.
