Xabi Alonso Plans for the Future as Bayer Leverkusen’s Defending Champions Prepare for New Season

At the moment of the great triumph, Xabi Alonso (42) was already thinking about the new season, in which Bayer Leverkusen will start as defending champions.

“The expectations will be greater. We have to make the right, intelligent decisions. From Monday onwards, my wish is to prepare something new,” said Alonso after the 1-0 win in the cup final against Lautern.

Garcia is set to be Alonso’s first new signing

In the next few days, the first new signing for Bayer 04 could be perfect: BILD had already reported on May 8 that the Spaniard Aleix Garcia (26) from FC Girona is a candidate for Leverkusen.

On Sunday, Sky and Kicker reported that Leverkusen had agreed on a long-term contract with Garcia. The midfielder and captain of Girona has a fixed release clause of 15 million euros in his contract, which runs until 2026.

Garcia is considered a passing machine and is set to become the fourth top man alongside Granit Xhaka (31), Robert Andrich (29) and Exequiel Palacios (25) for the double six. This season, the senior international scored three goals and provided six assists in 40 competitive matches (37 in the league and three in the cup).
