When Bayer Leverkusen once won the UEFA Cup

Bayer Leverkusen wants to win its second title of the season in Dublin on Tuesday evening. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team will face Atalanta Bergamo in the Europa League final. Bayer, as the German champions, who are unbeaten in 51 games, are slightly favorites going into the game, which kicks off at 9 p.m. (live on RTL). To mark this occasion, we take a look back to 1988, when Bayer had already won the UEFA Cup. At that time, Bayer met Espanyol Barcelona and suffered a 3-0 defeat in the first leg (back then there were still two-legged finals) under coach Erich Ribbeck. In the second leg, Leverkusen managed a 3-0 win. This led to a penalty shootout, which Bayer clearly won.
