We lost, so we cough on you, or When the ice hockey players of Russia can’t bear the defeat

This year’s World Hockey Championship enters its elimination phase on Thursday. The four defeated teams will have to pack their bags, the winners will then share it in the fight for medals. Russia’s hockey players are understandably missing from the championship due to the aggression in Ukraine, and it will be the same next year as well. Some fans do not like the non-participation of the team, because they think that the tournament would reach a higher level of sport. It may be true. However, if we remember the behavior of the Russian hockey players after the final debacle with Canada at our home championship in 2015, we have to ask ourselves if we really miss this.

What actually happened then? In the sold-out O2 arena, the two biggest hockey giants in history, Canada and Russia, played it out in the final of the world championship. After losing 0:2 to Canada in the semi-final, our hockey players competed for bronze against the USA and, unfortunately, they did not win the medal they dreamed of after losing 0:3.

But back to the final match, which should have been the highlight of hockey. Those who were looking forward to a thrilling and exciting finale had to be disappointed. The representatives of the “maple leaves” clearly overcame their Russian juice and after a crushing 6:1 win, they could rejoice in the gold medals.

However, when the Canadian hockey players took them over, most of the Russians headed for the cabins without a shred of good manners. Only a small group around star Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin remained on the ice. However, they also left the ice surface on the orders of captain Ilya Kovalchuk, and that was at the moment when Canadian captain Sidney Crosby started walking around the ice with the championship trophy.

When the anthem of victorious Canada rang out through the O2 arena, there was no longer a single Russian hockey player on the field. No respect, no respect for the opponent and we don’t even have to talk about the art of accepting defeat. No, we don’t really miss this.
