Wayne Rooney is the new manager of Plymouth Argyle, the club reports through official channels. The 38-year-old former striker had already reached a verbal agreement with the Championship club this week and has now signed a three-year contract.

For Rooney it is already his fourth club in his young coaching career. After starting coaching at Derby County (player/coach and head coach), he left for DC United in 2022.

At the beginning of this year he was fired from Birmingham City after twelve dramatic weeks. The number 22 of the last Championship season finished one point below Plymouth Argyle and therefore drops to League One.

Birmingham were sixth when Rooney took control. A run of two wins and nine defeats in fifteen games resulted in his early dismissal.

Rooney succeeds Ian Foster, who was dismissed in April, at Plymouth Argyle, who did not last more than three months. It is expected that he will be given the opportunity to set up his own technical staff.

It is not entirely coincidental that Plymouth Argyle ends up with Rooney. Sporting director Neil Dewsip previously worked with the former top striker at Everton. Dewsip was working in the Toffees’ youth academy when Rooney had his breakthrough.

It promises to be a busy summer for Rooney as it was announced this week that he will also be part of the BBC’s live coverage of the upcoming European Championships in Germany.

Since his dismissal from Birmingham, Rooney has regularly appeared as an analyst on English television for channels such as Sky, TNT Sports and BBC Sport. During the European Championship he will analyze the matches of the English team.
