If coach Marcel Rapp’s team gets at least one point against Fortuna Düsseldorf next Saturday evening (May 11th, 2024), promotion would be perfect. At least the KSV can no longer be denied participation in the relegation anyway. “We know the importance of this game. We have already achieved great things, but we are hungry for more – and we want to show that next week,” said Rapp in the Sportschau interview.

Bad debut for Wiesbaden’s coach Döring

Wehen Wiesbaden, on the other hand, remains in the relegation zone. The new coach Nils Döring, who replaced Markus Kauczinski, who was released after the 3:5 defeat against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, suffered a defeat at the start. “The disappointment is great, it was a bitter defeat. The momentum is simply not on our side at the moment,” said Döring in the Sportschau interview.

Mathisen’s goal for SVWW was conceded by VAR

The first chance of the game was missed by Wehens Nikolas Agrafiotis, who took a through ball directly but aimed it right at goalkeeper Timon Weiner (9th). On the other hand, a shot from Philipp Sander flew just past the left post (23′).

Both teams looked for a way forward, but their focus in the first half was on being prepared against counterattacks. This made the game rather boring. However, shortly before the break it picked up speed.

Weiner fended off a dangerous side kick from Ivan Prtajin for a corner kick, after which Marcus Mathisen headed the ball in. However, referee Felix Zwayer did not recognize the goal after the video assistant pointed out because the ball was temporarily out of the goal during the corner kick.

Bennetts directs Kiels Becker’s header into his own goal

In the second half the game became more attractive. Both coaches changed offensively. Keanan Bennetts, who was supposed to cause danger during labor in Wiesbaden, became a tragic figure. However, the Englishman deflected a header from Timo Becker into his own goal from a corner kick in the 65th minute.

Since the ball would have flown into the net without the help of Bennetts, the goal was attributed to former Schalke player Becker, who also helped the Gelsenkirchen team in the fight against relegation.

Wehen Wiesbaden struggled to equalize. But the resources were too limited to endanger a lackluster promotion aspirant.

Wiesbaden is now in Braunschweig, Kiel against Düsseldorf

Wehen Wiesbaden will play on matchday 33 at Eintracht Braunschweig (Sunday, May 12, 24, 1:30 p.m.), which has three points more and is in 15th place in the table. Holstein Kiel has it in its hands against Fortuna from Düsseldorf to give the state of Schleswig-Holstein a Bundesliga team for the first time.
