Venezuelan Pitcher Suárez Makes History with 9 Consecutive Wins in MLB

He Venezuelan Ranger Suárez extended the starts in which he has won to 9 and so far this season, in the Major Leagues, he is the first pitcher to have this many wins.

His departure before the Texas Rangers, Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, was another luxury. He fanned 10 opponents and in seven full innings he barely allowed a streak to leave his ERA at 1.36 in ten starts.

The MLB website highlights that since 1966 with Juan Marichal there has not been a pitcher who has reached 9 wins with an ERA less than 1.50.

Regarding his unparalleled year with the Philadelphia Phillies, the pitcher explained that “no, I just go on the mound and try to do the best job possible. I try to keep the game within reach of my teammates so that the team has a chance to win. That is the most important thing,” he added to the MLB.

His outing, in which the Philadelphia Phillies beat the current World Series champions 5-2, allowed him to record his game with the most strikeouts: a total of 10. In the seven innings he allowed one run, five hits and delivered two tickets.

Record figures for Suárez

The Major League Baseball website also highlights that his average earned runs allowed “is the third best in franchise history in 10 games started.” Only Grover Alexander — another Hall of Famer — had a better mark in his first 10 starts of a season, something he did in 1916 (1.24) and 1915 (1.31) »; that is, more than 100 years ago.

Apart from his initial start, in which he came out without a decision, in the next nine he has only scored seven runs in 61 innings.

On this last list he is now along with eight other pitchers, among them the Venezuelan Johan Santana, who did it in 2004 and is remembered as one of the best on the mound. The closest in this place is Blake Snell in 2018. The rest go from 1992 to 1959.

For Suárez it’s about enjoying himself while he’s on the mound. “I enjoy the results we get, and I enjoy the wins we get as a team,” he told MLB.

He debuted with the Phillies in 2018, a season later they lowered him to Triple A, but then promoted him again. Since then he has been a key player in the Quakers’ rotation. He went from long reliever to starter and all his efforts have been rewarded in this first stage of the 2024 season.

When he reached eight wins, he was the seventh pitcher to reach this figure with an ERA of 1.00 and 50 strikeouts. He was paired with Clayton Kershaw (2014), Cliff Lee (2009), Johan Santana (2004), Roger Clemens (1990), Bob Gibson (1968) and Dominican Juan Marichal (1967).
