Union Berlin Extends Contract with Andras Schäfer Amid Bundesliga Relegation Battle

Union Berlin is in the middle of the Bundesliga relegation battle – and at the same time is working on the squad of the future: Andras Schäfer remains loyal to the project in the capital in any case. That has been clear since Wednesday.

Union Berlin and Andras Schäfer – that fits. As the Iron team announced on Wednesday morning, the midfielder’s contract was extended early. As usual, the Berliners did not provide any information about the contract details.

“Union is an extraordinary club that supported me, especially in my difficult phases,” said Schäfer, explaining his signing in a club statement: “I am very happy to be back on the pitch for the club and am very pleased to be able to do so in to be able to do in the future.”

The Hungarian “Player of the Year” 2021 moved to Union from the Slovakian first division club DAC Dunajska Streda in January 2022 – and was quickly able to impress with his strength in duels and his offensive style of play.

But setbacks also followed: In November 2022, Schäfer underwent surgery on his right foot, and after a short comeback, another setback followed in the final spurt of the 2022/23 season.

Ruhnert is absolutely convinced by Schäfer

This season, the 24-time Hungarian senior national player (three goals) has made 17 Bundesliga appearances (one goal, one assist, kicker grade average 3.83) – he was substituted six times and substituted seven times. In total, he has 49 competitive games for Union, in which he scored two goals and three assists.

“With Andras, we are signing a young player who has developed excellently and continues to show high development potential,” says Oliver Ruhnert, Managing Director of Men’s Professional Football at Union, explaining the move: “His performances this season show how important Andras is for the team , which is why we are very pleased to continue to have him in our ranks.”

The most important mission lies ahead for Schäfer and his Iron team in the final spurt: against Bochum (H), Cologne (A) and Freiburg (H), the aim is to prevent the team from falling into the 2nd league.
