Tyrol’s Young Judo Elite Shines at Bielsko Biala Cadet European Cup 2024

Last Sunday, May 19th, 2024, Tyrol’s young judo elite fought in the U18 class at the “Bielsko Biala Cadet European Cup 2024” for the last chance to qualify for the European Cadet Championships 2024 in Sofia. The U18 tournament, which was very well attended with 833 judokas from 30 countries, is one of the highlights of the first half of the year for our young athletes. With 3 No. 1s, 4 No. 2s and 5 No. 3s in the world rankings, this was the who’s who of the U18 judokas on site. From a Tyrolean perspective, Felix Einfinger (-73kg / Judozentrum Innsbruck), Jakob Unterrainer-Rautter (-73kg / Union Raika Osttirol), Simon Margreiter (-73kg / ATSV Jenbach), Lorenz Horngacher (-90kg / WSG Wattens) and Mavie were there Rabl (-63kg / Judo Center Innsbruck).

Jakob Unterrainer-Rautter started his first European Cup this weekend. After he had a bye in round 1, the East Tyrolean had to deal with the Croatian Rajcic Marko in round 2. After almost 1 1/2 minutes of fighting, Unterrainer had to admit defeat with Ippon.

Simon Margreiter was drawn against the German Laleike Yoshiya in round 1. After a courageous fight, the German had the better end after almost 4 minutes of fighting time and won with Ippon. For both Tyrolean judokas, the tournament day was unfortunately over after the first fight.

Felix Einfinger fared better. The 17-year-old SportBorg student fought his way from round 1 to the Serbian Popovic Vuk with 2 Wazari scores, then round 2 to the Ukrainian Balenko Yehor with Ippon and into the quarter-finals. There, after a long, evenly matched battle, he lost to Georgian Mumladze Giorgi with 3 penalties. As Mumladze also had 2 penalties on his side, this was very bitter with 6 seconds to go. In the subsequent repeach, Einfinger had to admit defeat to Latvian Kullo Tits. With 12th place, he narrowly missed out on a top result.

The only female participant from a Tyrolean perspective was the Judo Center Innsbruck, 15-year-old Sportborg student Mavie Rabl. In round one, the Tyrolean won against Boelcskei Hanna from Germany and in round two against Boelsma Mila from the Netherlands, both with Ippon. Rabl then met Natelauri Mariam from Georgia and was defeated by a counterattack followed by a pin. The first round of hope against Wozniak Urszula from Poland went to the young Tyrolean again through Ippon. Unfortunately, she lost to the Ukrainian Boichenko Daria in the second repechage round due to carelessness, so she finished in 9th place.

The 15-year-old SportHAS student Horngacher Lorenz took to the mat at the beginning of the tournament against the Pole Strzelec Hubert and was able to win this fight as well as the second round against the Belgian Ngoumou David. Unfortunately, in round 3, the eventual winner of his class, the Ukrainian Lebid Dmytro, was defeated. In the repechage round against the Montenegrin Bulatovic Pavle, the young Tyrolean was just unable to prevail despite a great effort and thus reached 12th place.

State coach Anna Katharina Told was quite satisfied with the performance of her protégés: “The performances of our young athletes are getting better and better, even at the highest international level. We are on the right track and hope to qualify for at least 2 European Championships.
