TSB Ravensburg Judo Team Takes the Lead in 2nd Bundesliga with Victory Over Heidelberg-Mannheim Judofighters

The TSB Ravensburg judokas continue to show their strength after promotion. In Heidelberg, the Ravensburgers defeated the Judofighters from Mannheim-Heidelberg 8:6 and thus took the lead in the 2nd Judo Bundesliga for the first time. For the Heidelberg-Mannheim judo team it was the first defeat in more than a year.

That was certainly the best team performance I’ve seen from my team in recent years.

TSB-Trainer Uli Rothenhäusler

JT trainer Carmen Bruckmann sent 21 Judofighters to the scales in the fight against TSB Ravensburg, TSB trainer Uli Rothenhäusler traveled to the Olympic base in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region with 14 athletes. Bruckmann put their best fighters on the mat against Ravensburg. In total, the Judofighters had seven fighters on the mat who had already won medals at German or European championships. It was correspondingly atmospheric and loud at the Olympic base.

The fact that it was significantly quieter in the hall after two fights was due to the two judokas from Dornbirn, who won the first two points for the TSB. “Haanka” Bathuyag (over 100 kilograms) forced his Greek opponent and former U18 European champion Ambra Bourntouli into extra time, only to then get the decisive score with a hip throw. The 16-year-old Matteo Gruber (up to 60 kilograms) gave Mohamed Bada no chance in the ground fight, turned the Heidelberg man onto his back and there was no escape from the subsequent hold.

Staying in Japan pays off

Christian Voegele (up to 100 kilograms) lost to Sydney Mai with a hip throw and Niklas Böhm (up to 66 kilograms) lost to Jan Mollet with a self-falling technique. After Marco Frey (up to 81 kilograms) won against Jonas Mollet, Robin Weiler (up to 90 kilograms) lost to the German runner-up Pascal Bruckmann with a school-sized large inner sickle.

With the score at 3:3, Luca Guilbaut (up to 73 kilograms) showed once again that his year-long stay in Japan had a huge influence on his judo. The Ravensburger faced Boris Trupka, three-time German champion and former European Cup winner. In a tactically strong fight, the Ravensburger player scored a shoulder throw and confidently took it to give his team a 4-3 half-time lead over time.

Preliminary decision immediately after the break

“We haven’t won anything yet,” Rothenhäusler warned his athletes before the rematch. He only exchanged the two athletes necessary according to the rules. Two other fighters, Elias Kühn (up to 66 kilograms) and Leandro de Luca (up to 90 kilograms), made their first Bundesliga appearances. At this point, the Judofighters fans still believed in a positive overall result for their team.

But this tooth was quickly pulled out by the fighters from the Rhine. Bathuyag defeated Bourntouli early and, according to coach Rothenhäusler, Gruber was also reliable. The super lightweight also had no problems with Leon Becker, got two big scores and the second win in the second half of the season. Voegele was able to take revenge against May and thus ensured a 7:3 score for the Upper Swabians. After defeats by Kühn, Frey and de Luca, the score was only 7:6 before the last encounter.

No team will underestimate us anymore.

Uli Rothenhäusler

Here the TSB judoka had their currently best fighter on the list. Guilbaut clearly stood up to the 2020 German champion Sascha Kirschen and thundered him to the mat after 45 seconds with a spectacular combination to make the final score 8:6. “That was certainly the best team performance I have seen from my team in recent years,” Rothenhäusler praised his team. “We won all open individual fights and several fights in which we were clearly underdogs. No team will underestimate us anymore.”

In just over a week and a half, TSB Ravensburg will be fighting against the relegated team from the 1st Bundesliga, the multiple German team champions JC Rüsselsheim.
