NBA Draft Lottery – Verlierer: Toronto Raptors
A fitting end to a needed season for the Raptors. Despite having the sixth-worst record in the league, Toronto now finds itself without a pick as it slipped two spots in the lottery and now has to give up its top-six protected pick to the Spurs.
It’s the consequence of many questionable decisions by the Raptors over the past few years, starting with the missed trades of Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet, who left the franchise for little to no return. Instead, a mediocre team chased the playoffs, which they missed in each of the last two years.
That’s also why they lost the pick. The trade for Jakob Pöltl in February 2023, when they gave up that protected pick, Khem Birch and two second-round picks, now looks even worse, and the equivalent value for OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam was more than modest. It might take a while for the Raptors to become relevant again.
