VfL Bochum is fighting to avoid relegation in the relegation match against Fortuna Düsseldorf. They can count on prominent support. Leon Goretzka is cheering on the team in the stands – wearing the VfL cult jersey.

Leon Goretzka has been on holiday since last Saturday. After his FC Bayern Munich team’s 2:4 defeat at TSG Hoffenheim, the 29-year-old has the day off because national coach Julian Nagelsmann did not call him up for the German national team’s squad for the European Championship. But the midfielder obviously hasn’t had enough of football after a long season with Bayern.

In addition to the classic blue and white, the jersey has colorful rainbow stripes on the chest and the lettering of the sponsor “Faber Lotto-Service”. Bochum played in the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons with these jerseys, which have now achieved cult status.

Goretzka went through the entire youth system at VfL and joined the pros as a teenager in 2012. He took his first steps in professional football in the 2012/13 season and played 32 games for VfL in the second division, scoring four goals and providing five assists. He then moved to the first division with neighbours FC Schalke 04 before moving to FC Bayern Munich five years later.

Still some hope for participation in the European Championship

Bayern’s former coach Thomas Tuchel believes that Goretzka has not yet completely written off the European Championship. “I believe that he still has some hope. Anything can happen,” said Tuchel, apparently with a view to possible injury-related absences of nominated European Championship players during tournament preparations and possible subsequent nominations.

Gorretzka has been part of all major tournaments for the senior national team since the 2017 Confederations Cup, including the 2018 World Cup, the 2021 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup. All three tournaments ended early and were therefore disappointing for Goretzka.
