Top Five Unforgettable Thursday Night Football Games in NFL History

Some young people say that Thursday Night Football is the prime time in the NFL with the most ugly games. It is true that the recent past condemns: whoever does not remember of that 2022 Colts and Broncos, as flashy as a sewer ditch? Or even some clashes from last year, like Patriots and Steelers, Panthers and Bears, that dormant Broncos and Chiefs…

In any case, it is unfair to put everything in the same basket, as Thrusday Night has indeed had memorable matches in its 18 years of existence. The first game in this year’s schedule, for example, has everything it needs to be on this list: simply a Ravens and Chiefs in the opening of the 2024 season. That’s why we’ve separated five unforgettable games in the history of the NFL that took place in prime time on Thursday.

Lions 21 x 20 Chiefs, Week 1, 2023

If next season’s kickoff is even 1% as crazy as last year’s, we’ll already be well served. The previous Super Bowl champion – that’s a pleonasm to say – received a team that, at that point, needed to prove expectations and show that they would fight for bigger things. The most skeptics were betting that the Lions’ team would turn into a pumpkin at some point, however, in week 1, that soon fell apart.

Dan Campbell and his team did not give up in the face of a hostile Arrowhead: aggressive, bold – complete with a fake punt and the first touchdown of the year – and capitalizing on the (many) drops of the opposing receivers. The 21×20 would be a great start to the season for Detroit, which would reach the NFC final and break a three-decade taboo. In Kansas City, the wide receivers’ problem would continue for the rest of the season, but the story ended happily with another Vince Lombardi trophy in the gallery.

Jets 34 x 31 Patriots, Week 11 of 2008

2008 was an atypical year for the Jets and Patriots. One experienced the euphoria (and massive doses of madness) of the Brett Favre experience. The other, after an undefeated season the previous year, but losing the Super Bowl, catalyzed the run of bad luck with Tom Brady out of the season. What did the two have in common, besides being in the same division? Both survived on life support in the fight for playoffs and, in week 11, whoever lost would be one step away from saying goodbye.

The Jets started crushing their rivals at Gillette Stadium: Favre with two TDs, the defense forcing Matt Cassel to fumble and a 92-yard kickoff return that turned into a touchdown. However, in the last quarter, the Patriots got on the scoreboard, with Randy Moss tying the game in the last second of regulation time and thus forcing the first overtime in the history of Thrusday Night. For the Patriots, the reward for their effort would not come: the Jets had the first drive and the winning field goal, putting the kibosh on the team’s last postseason hopes. Not that the Jets did well either, as they finished 9-7, missed out on the playoffs and ended the short Brett Favre era. But that’s a story for another day.
