Is Tadej Pogacar thinking of a sixth stage victory today? “That’s Not the Plan”

Tadej Pogacar achieved his fifth day victory in the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday in the pouring rain. Today’s stage – with arrival at the Passo Brocon – is also tailor-made for the Slovenian. Although a new stage victory is not a must for the Slovenian glutton.

The 159 kilometer long seventeenth stage goes from the Selva di Val Gardena winter sports area to Passo Brocon. Along the way it goes up and down constantly. With one third category climb and four first or second category climbs, there are enough points to make a difference. And certainly for the best climber in this Giro.

But does Pogacar actually have nefarious plans? “Today the plan is to keep the team together as much as possible on the first climb of the day,” says the man in the pink jersey – in conversation with Eurosport – on the Passo Sella (8.9 km at 7.4%). “We will then determine our further course strategy.”

“The plan is not to go for the stage win today. Once again: we especially want to ride around in groups for as long as possible,” said Pogacar, who still has five stages to complete before he will be crowned the overall winner of the 107th Giro in Rome. “It’s not far to Rome, but it feels like an eternity,” he says with a smile.
