Bayern miss a win – a draw in the first leg

FC Bayern gets off to a strong start in the giant duel in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, but falls behind. A double strike then brings Bayern close to victory. But Real Madrid managed to equalize with a strong Toni Kroos.

Toni Kroos has been playing for Real Madrid since 2014. The German international’s current contract expires on June 30th. The midfield strategist is very relaxed about the open decision about his future. For him, other things are more important.

It was the 24th minute on Tuesday evening when we once again saw why he is still so important. Whether for Real Madrid – or for the German national team, where he celebrated his comeback in March after three years.

Toni Kroos, a perfect strategist, spotted a small, free space in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against FC Bayern (2-2). He also saw that his strike colleague Vinicius Junior had pulled Munich defender Min-jae Kim from the back row and was sprinting away from the South Korean. Kroos only focused on this scene, he wasn’t interested in what was happening around him. And when everything was perfect, the space was open and the Brazilian was moving at top speed, Kroos played the “stratospheric pass,” as the Spanish newspaper “Marca” put it. So simple, so brilliant. Vinicius Junior completed it without much effort.

“Kroos, genius,” wrote “Marca” about the midfielder, who has been under contract with the Royals since 2014. After winning the World Cup with Germany, he moved from FC Bayern to Real. It remains to be seen whether he, who has now played in Madrid for ten years, will stay there beyond the season. Kroos, 34 years old, wants to concentrate more on the title chances with Real and the German national team in the final phase of the current season and think less about his future.

“Of course I’m thinking about it, no question about it,” says Kroos

“It’s not that phase right now. Nothing has been decided yet,” said Kroos after the game: “We now have a Champions League semi-final and hopefully a final. Well, the league is almost over and then we’ll see.”

In the Spanish championship, Real’s title can hardly be taken away. Kroos’ contract in Madrid expires on June 30th. What happens next for him after that remains to be seen. At the end of March, several media outlets reported that an extension until 2025 was just a formality. “Of course I’m worried, that’s no question. The decision hasn’t been made at the moment, but I’m happy that we’re still involved everywhere in this phase of the season,” said the 108-time national player on Prime Video. He is looking forward to the possible Champions League final in London and then to the home European Championship with the national team.

“I’m looking forward to a lot in the next few weeks,” said Kroos. When asked whether he would end his career in the summer after triumphs in the Champions League and the Spanish league and with the European championship title, Kroos replied with a smile: “If you sign that to me, then you definitely have to think about it.”

Against Bayern, Kroos was substituted for Luka Modric after 74 minutes. By then he had had 97 ball contacts – and played 82 passes, with a pass rate of 96 percent.
