The search for a coach at FC Bayern continues – and is anything but easy. The group of candidates is manageable. And the very clear line seems to have been briefly lost after Ralf Rangnick’s recent rejection, as the Bavarian decision-makers had firmly taken into account the Austrian national coach’s commitment. After Rangnick said no, the coaching search process started again almost from scratch.
Pep Guardiola haunts the office on Säbener Strasse as a dream solution, but it is unlikely that the Spaniard will return this summer, according to FC Bayern. As well as Thomas Tuchel’s continuation, which was also thought about in the meantime, but no majority was found. And even Tuchel himself – in a purely theoretical case – would probably be difficult to convince.
Hansi Flick (59), Louis van Gaal (72) and Lucien Favre (66) were discussed, but the ideas behind them were not (yet) seriously pursued. Now, according to kicker information, there is a new concrete lead. And that leads to Erik ten Hag (54). The Dutchman coached Munich’s second team from 2013 to 2015 and is currently still in office as head coach at Manchester United. In England, however, there is speculation about his departure after the season – and current FCB coach Thomas Tuchel is considered the Red Devils’ hot candidate for successor.
In any case, the sports directors around Max Eberl and Christoph Freund have included ten Hag in their plans. At the moment, however, the upcoming second leg of the Champions League semi-final at Real Madrid has top priority. The Munich entourage will take off on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. on a special flight towards Spain and will land back in Munich on Thursday afternoon. Only then should the search for trainers be intensified again. As of now, a possible Tuchel/ten Hag swap for the new season cannot be ruled out.
