The ProA Playoffs: Intense Competition for BBL Promotion

Hot phase in the ProA!

Since this weekend, the Second Basketball Bundesliga has been fighting for promotion to the BBL. Eight teams are involved and play against each other in a play-off format. The rounds are played in a best-of-five format. Two teams can advance.

SPORT BILD says what’s in store for the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga

Of the eight teams, five have submitted a license application for the BBL: Fraport Skyliners, Jobstairs Gießen 46ers, Medipolis SC Jena, PS Karlsruhe Lions and the Römerstrom Gladiators Trier.

For Giessen and Karlsruhe, who meet in the first round, a license is by no means guaranteed in the event of promotion. Both have halls that are too small. In Gießen, a move to nearby Wetzlar (15 kilometers away) is therefore being considered. There the HSG plays in the Liqui Moly Handball Bundesliga.

Giessen won the first game. Also thanks to the 18 points from Robin Benzing (35). The former captain of the German national team (167 international matches) moved to his hometown of Hesse before the season. And should now help the people of Giessen return to the upper house.

In the regular season, the Jobstairs ended up in second place, behind the team from Trier.

They also have a prominent name in their ranks: Maik Zirbes (34). The center has 75 international appearances for Germany and has played for big clubs such as Bayern Munich, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Red Star Belgrade in his career.

Zirbes contributed 16 points to the win in the first game against Münster.

If Trier prevails, Frankfurt’s Marco Völler (35) may be waiting in the next round. The son of football legend Rudi Völler (64) had already ended his career and worked as a sports manager for the Skyliners. Before the start of the season he declared his comeback.

Völler Jr. currently has always struggling with knee problems. In the 89:74 win against Jena in the first game, he was on the floor for twelve minutes and scored six points.

On the other hand, ex-national player Joshiko Saibou (34/21 times for Germany) scored eight points.

The surprise team of the regular ProA season was the Bozic Estriche Knights Kirchheim. They qualified for the play-offs in sixth place and even won the first game at Phoenix Hagen.
