The Journey of Juan Manuel Postigos: From Judo Championships to Olympic Dreams

Juan Manuel Postigos lives in France and has managed to divide his time between his training on the tatami and his work as a train carriage repairman for the French national railway service (SNCF).

After winning the silver medal in the Pan American and Oceania Senior Judo Championships in Brazil, Juan Miguel Postigos returned to Peru to continue his preparation at the Legado Videna headquarters, with the aim of sealing his qualification for Paris 2024. Without a doubt , the Peruvian aims to add to his history as the only Peruvian judoka with four participations in the Olympic Games.

“The Pan American in Brazil was a pretty tough tournament, it is one of the last qualifiers for the Olympics. Many countries were with the best, this brings me closer to the goal and I have to be focused. In Judo, I am the only one with three participations in the Olympic Games. I have tried to be an example to follow for the youngest people in the country. I hope that I can open more paths and I would like more judokas to emerge who surpass my record,” he stated.

The ‘Tigre’, who represented the country in Tokyo 2020, will go this weekend to compete in the Pan American Open in Chile, then at the Abu Dhabi World Cup, which will take place from May 19 to 24. Likewise, he looks optimistically at his participation in the Lima 2024 Pan American Open, which will take place at the Legado Videna venue, from June 21 to 22. These competitions grant classification points to Paris 2024 and the best in America will return to the Peruvian capital to reach the last Olympic tickets.

“My career would end in Paris 2024. I have lived in France for 13 years and my motivation to be in a new Olympics arises from the encouragement that my co-workers, my partner, my boss, among others, give me. Maybe I will prepare a farewell at the 2025 Bolivarian Games,” he added.

“Peruvian Judo is progressing, above all, at the level of event organization. In Lima we will have important tournaments that will close the qualification for Paris 2024. But there is still work to massify the discipline, involving the national and regional governments, IPD and other institutions,” he asserts.

Within this framework and as a result of joint work with the federation, our Legado Videna headquarters will host the Cadet World Championship from August 28 to September 1, in which more than 600 judokas from 70 countries will participate.

The Special Legacy Project will continue in coordination with the different federations of the country, offering top-level infrastructure so that Peru continues to establish itself as the epicenter of mega sporting events in America.
