A few years ago TV3 managed to bring together Johan Cruyff and Xavi Hernández in a talk, where they reflected on the figure of the first coach. The Dutchman expanded on his experience on the Barça bench and gave some advice to Xavi with some very forceful phrases: “It’s not pleasant,” the coach reflected.
This is how Cruyff started his advice. “A coach is a lonely guy and has the entire club against or for him, it depends on whether you win or lose.but you have to make decisions based on knowledge,” he began by saying.
“LThe only way to survive is if you can send the president to take the hell there. And don’t let him get involved and, if not, goodbye, good night. It is having the strength to say: ‘for all of you, this is the best player, but he bothers me and goes out’. “If you have this mental strength of character, you are a good coach for the first team of Barcelona, Ajax or Manchester, a great one,” he highlighted.
“It has nothing to do with football quality. It has to do with the character of getting where you think you have to get. If there is a player who bothers you because he doesn’t do what he should, you have to kill him. If you can’t due to strength or character, live well and take the second team. Being the first coach is not pleasant, huh? It’s quite unpleasant. From time to time you have to get angry. And make no mistake: the first coach has to include 11, but there are twenty players,” he recalled. Some words that have gone viral at a time when Xavi is experiencing his most complicated hours at Barça.
