Tennis

Novak Djokovic lost to Czech Tomas Machac in his dress rehearsal for the French Open. The 37-year-old world number one and Grand Slam record winner lost to the 23-year-old in the semifinals of the ATP clay court tournament in Geneva on Friday with 4:6 6:0 1:6. For the first time since 2018, the Serb will travel to the Major in Paris, where he is the defending champion, without winning a tournament in the year.

How Djokovic will get to Roland Garros is something only he knows. The 24-time Grand Slam tournament winner showed different faces against Machac. In the first set he took a 4-1 lead before losing the set 4-6. In the second set, Djokovic gave the world number 44 no chance before the Serb’s resistance was no longer strong in the third set.

It is also conceivable that Djokovic considered his task in Geneva to be solved after three matches and that he now wants to prepare for the clay court major like all his competitors in Paris. Although the three-time French Open winner has not won a tournament since mid-November, when he won the Masters in Turin, he is one of the favorites in Paris. In the first round, Djokovic will face the French local hero Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
