Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from the Masters 1000 in Rome, just over two weeks before Roland-Garros

In Madrid he felt pain again. Eliminated in the quarter-final of the Spanish Masters 1000 by Andrey Rublev this Wednesday, Carlos Alcaraz will not participate in that of Rome next week. The world number 3 announced it this Friday on his Twitter account.

“I felt some pain after playing in Madrid, some discomfort in my arm,” said the Spaniard. Today I had some tests and I have muscle swelling from my last injury. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in Rome. I need rest to recover and be able to play 100% without pain. »

Carlos Alcaraz has been carrying around his arm injury for many weeks, and still plays with a bandage. At the beginning of April, he had already withdrawn from the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo, then for the ATP 500 in Barcelona. The 20-year-old was the two-time defending champion in Madrid. He won the tournament in 2022 against Alexander Zverev, then last year against Jan-Lennard Struff.

A little over two weeks before the start of Roland-Garros (from May 20 to June 9), the physical state of Carlos Alcaraz is worrying. The Spaniard, although very comfortable on clay, has so far never lifted the Coupe des Mousquetaires. Last year, he lost in the semi-final against Novak Djokovic, a match in which he also finished injured.
