Mark van Bommel to Depart Royal Antwerp FC at End of Season: What’s Next for the Trainer?

Mark van Bommel will no longer be a trainer of Royal Antwerp FC next season. It is not official, but both parties would have agreed on it.

Mark van Bommel will leave Royal Antwerp FC at the end of the season. That news was announced on Friday afternoon, although it has not yet been officially confirmed by the trainer or the club. It has been in the air for a while that it would happen, but the reason for that decision is of course guesswork.

In Gazet van Antwerpen, Patrick Goots tries to find out what the Dutchman’s motivation would be. “We cannot get into Van Bommel’s head to find out the true reasons behind his decision, but perhaps he was told that the financial options to strengthen the team towards next season remain limited,” it said.

That may be a reason, but it may also be that Van Bommel already knows where he will be working next season. “Who knows, the interest in him may be more concrete than he lets on. I don’t think you can just cancel a current contract without having something else in mind.”

Van Bommel has already been linked to various clubs in the Netherlands, but it could well be that he opts for another foreign adventure outside Belgium. For the time being, Antwerp and Van Bommel are keeping tight-lipped about everything.
