Teddy Riner Clinches 11th Grand Slam Gold Medal in Dushanbe: A Judo Champion’s Triumph

Teddy Riner comes back and wins again. The Frenchman won the final against Temur Rakhimov in style. A new title for an extraordinary judoka.

a demonstration

Last Sunday in Dushanbe, Teddy Riner offered a real demonstration of his supremacy in the world of judo during the +100 kg final against the Tajik Temur Rakhimov, although well placed in the world rankings as number 2, while the French was positioned in fourth place. This victory allowed him to win his third Grand Slam of the year 2024, after his successes in Paris on February 4 and in Antalya (Turkey) on March 31.

In an electrifying atmosphere, the judoka from Guadeloupe crushed his opponent from the start, quickly taking control of the fight with a solid posture and impressive agility. Rakhimov, appearing helpless in the face of Riner’s determination, conceded a waza-ari (on o-soto-gari) which was ultimately overturned. However, this did not deter Riner, who followed up with a right uchi-mata, knocking him to the ground with unstoppable precision and thus winning by ippon.

dushanbe after antalya

Just five weeks after his victory at the Antalya Grand Slam, Teddy Riner was back on the tatami in Dushanbe. His goal: to accumulate points for the Olympic rankings in preparation for the Paris Games this summer. This victory brought him 1000 points, probably allowing him to climb from 9th to 2nd place in the ranking, only 1400 points behind the leader, the Russian Inal Tasoev. Building on this performance, Riner could well decide to no longer participate in any competition before the Olympic Games, despite his potential participation in the Grand Slam in Kazakhstan on May 12 and at the Worlds in Abu Dhabi on May 23, for which the French Federation has awarded him already reserved a place. A decision that will be made after an in-depth analysis with its technical team.

During this tournament, Riner brushed aside his opponents with disconcerting ease. Exempted from the first round, he defeated Munir Ertug in his first fight, using his experience to turn an action by the 20-year-old Turk to his advantage. In the quarter-finals, he faced Losseni Kone, whom he had already dominated during the Grand Slam in Paris in February. The German, a little too hasty in his offensive, left an opening that Riner exploited brilliantly, throwing him to the ground for a decisive ippon.

In the semifinals, Riner met Denis Bachaev, a 19-year-old Russian who had eliminated the reigning European champion, Martti Puumalainen, in the previous round. Despite his opponent’s youth, Riner did not underestimate his talent and won with a spectacular ippon, once again demonstrating his mastery of judo at a world level.

In the final, Teddy Riner found his Tajik opponent, Temur Rakhimov, whom he had already beaten in the semi-final of the 2023 World Championships in Doha. This time, Riner repeated his performance, confirming his undisputed domination in the +100 kg category.

This impressive victory in Dushanbe once again highlights Teddy Riner’s exceptional talent and unwavering determination on tatamis around the world, placing him firmly among the favorites for the upcoming Olympic Games.
