Techfind Serie A1 – Umana Reyer Venezia is Italian champion

Umana Reyer Venezia is Italian champion for the third time in its history and returns to lift the Scudetto three years after the last one. The field factor wasn’t enough for Famila Schio to try to extend the series, because Reyer played a formidable match, with great defensive intensity and a great demonstration of coolness in the final moments. The match, which ended with a score of 74-80, began with Schio trying to attack right from the start, starting with a 5-0 run, but with the Villa-Kuier duo, Venezia returned to the lead at 10-11. The home team, however, found Robyn Parks in great form and thanks to her five points they went into the first break with a 19-15 lead. At the start of the second quarter Schio tries to escape on +7, but Villa and Fassina do not allow the Orange to escape. Schio, however, begins to shoot well from three points and thanks to Guirantes’ basket from beyond the arc he even reaches +10 (32-22), shifting the inertia of the match entirely to his side. However, it is only an impression, because Venezia once again remains there and responds immediately, with a partial of 1-10 which allows them to return to just one point behind: the first half ends at 33-32. In the third period, Venezia tries to escape at +7 (41-48), but a great Sottana scores a triple which almost halves the deficit. Berkani is cold from the line and so is Parks, before Sottana sends everyone to the final break at 48-52. In the fourth period Venezia tries again to escape at +6 (50-56), but Keys’ triple and Guirantes’ three-point play close the gap to -1 (56-57) and from that moment the teams remain always in contact, until reaching a tie at 70 with two minutes to go. The match is very intense and the first to put her head forward is Schio, who takes the lead to 71-70 with Juhasz’s free throw, regaining the lead after more than fifteen minutes. Parks responds to Berkani’s counter pass with a triple, but Kuier brings everything back to parity at 74 with fifty seconds left. Berkani and Villa only make 2/4 free throws, but it’s enough to bring Venezia up 2 (74-76), while on the other side Juhasz misses the triple for a possible overtaking with less than ten seconds to go. Schio is forced to foul and this time, on two consecutive occasions, Berkani makes 2/2 from the free throw line, closing the match at 74-80. Awak Kuier is the MVP of these finals, after closing today’s evening with a 24-point effort with 62% shooting, but all of Venice plays a match of the highest quality, defeating Schio at PalaRomare who was in their thirteenth final in a row. Venezia loses only eight balls and nullifies an evening in which Schio shoots 50% from three points. For Reyer, this is the first trophy after the 2020/2021 scudetto, which marks the culmination of an incredible season, in which she strung together a streak of 25 consecutive victories, taking home the most important national trophy. Furthermore, for the first time, the three big league teams shared the three seasonal trophies, with Virtus taking home the Super Cup, Schio the Italian Cup and Venezia, at the end of a dominated series, the Scudetto.
