Sporting Lisbon secured the Portuguese championship surprisingly early. Thanks to an unexpected 0-2 defeat by Benfica Lisbon at FC Famalicao on Sunday evening, Sporting have been confirmed as the new champions ahead of schedule.
With two games left to play, coach Ruben Amorim’s team can no longer be caught with an eight-point lead over city rivals Benfica. For Benfica and the former German Salzburg coach Roger Schmidt, who was coach of Red Bull Salzburg from 2012 to 2014, an overall disappointing season will end without a major title.
