Marseilles. The Olympic torch began its journey through France in Marseille at the foot of the Basilica of the Good Mother and led by former footballer Basile Boli, before being passed to other relays during the day, including a group of athletes from the European Union and Ukraine.

After Marseille, the flame will travel through France, including overseas territories, until its arrival in Paris on July 26, the opening date of the Olympics.

The first cauldron was lit on Wednesday in the port of the Mediterranean city by the rapper Jul, before 150 thousand people and the eyes of one billion television viewers around the world.

Among the 200 relievers there were athletes like basketball player Tony Parker, NBA champion with San Antonio, but also artists and neighbors.

In front of the MUCEM, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, coinciding with this May 9, Europe Day, the skier Cyprien Sarrazin symbolically received the torch from the Ukrainian gymnast Maria Vysochanska, captain of a collective relay with a representative of each country of the European Union.

This relay is a way to insist on our solidarity with Ukraine at a time when they are suffering a terrible war, said French Sports Minister Amélie Oudea-Castera.
