He was perhaps the sensational player of the past season: Serhou Guirassy from VfB Stuttgart. The start of the season was particularly brilliant for the Guinean. After eight match days, the striker had scored an incredible 14 goals – a Bundesliga record. In the five top European leagues, only Cristiano Ronaldo has been able to top that with 15 goals.

At the end of the season, Guirassy was able to double his goal tally to 28 goals and was only beaten in the race for the top scorer award by Harry Kane, who scored 36 times. It is clear to those responsible in Stuttgart that these numbers do not lie and that they arouse desire in the football world.

VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß finds it understandable that his protégé is considering a move. “I know that he feels very comfortable here and that he is thinking very carefully about whether to take this step,” he said last week. “But I also think it is legitimate for him to do it if there is something on the table. If the biggest clubs in Europe come knocking, then he has to think about it.”

Strike partner Deniz Undav, whose future at VfB is also unclear, wants his teammate to stay. “I’m working on him all the time. But he doesn’t let us see his cards. Everyone knows that it’s very, very difficult to keep hold of a striker like that.

The evidence is pointing towards a farewell. According to “Kicker” Guirassy has so far refused to make a clear commitment to VfB internally – in contrast to Undav.

In recent weeks, Guirassy has been repeatedly linked with Borussia Dortmund. Now there are new details about the possible transfer – and why it could fail.

Guirassy transfer could fail due to overall costs

As the “Bild” reports that Guirassy’s contract, which runs until 2026, contains an exit clause of 18 million euros. What sounds like a real bargain could end up costing BVB significantly more in the overall package.

Because of the low transfer fee, the Guinean is expecting a huge signing bonus. According to “Bild”, this is said to be over ten million euros. Such a bonus is quite common in the industry.

In addition, the 28-year-old would expect a significantly higher salary from a transfer. At VfB, this is said to be around three million euros. All in all, Guirassy’s services could cost Dortmund around 50 million euros, according to “Bild”.

It is a costly affair as Dortmund also wants to keep the loaned Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho. A commitment by Guirassy would probably also depend on possible departures that would bring money into the coffers.

Candidates for a transfer are Youssoufa Moukoko and Sébastien Haller. However, according to “Bild”, no relevant offers have been received for the two strikers yet.

Will Guirassy continue to play for VfB in the future? Teammate Undav is not giving up hope yet: “Maybe Serhou has a good heart and wants to play in the Champions League for another year.

There were a few surprises when the squad for the 2024 European Football Championship was announced. These include Leroy Sané, who struggled with pubic bone problems throughout the season but was nevertheless at his best in the Champions League. “He has a quality that I didn’t want to do without,” said DFB coach Julian Nagelsmann at the DFB press conference. And where the squads are announced, disappointments among the professionals are inevitable, both in Germany and when announcing other European Championship squads.
